Professor Dominique Blache is an academic in the School of Agriculture and Environment and active member of the UWA Institute of Agriculture at The University of Western Australia. Dr Blache earned his PhD in Neurosciences from Bordeaux, France. He joined UWA as a postdoctoral fellow and has since demonstrated a long-standing commitment to both teaching and research.
An established expert in animal welfare, stress physiology, emotional reactivity, and endocrine metabolism, Dr Blache developed one of the rare non-commercial assays for leptin, significantly advancing understanding of energy status and postpartum anoestrus in cattle. His pioneering work on emotional reactivity in sheep laid the groundwork for broader studies on animal personality and welfare. Collaborating with Professor Shane Maloney, Dr Blache has explored thermoregulation and selective brain cooling, producing numerous influential publications. From 2019, his scope expanded to include investigating phytoestrogen impacts on sheep reproduction, welfare indicators in pigs and sheep, and emerging studies on the gut microbiome’s interaction with temperament and heat stress.
Dr Blache’s prolific research output includes over 230 refereed papers, book chapters, and industry reports. His scholarly impact is reflected in an h-index ranging between 51 and 53 with over 10,000 citations. He has secured over 15 million dollars research fund during his research career.
Beyond research, Dr Blache serves in leadership and capacity-building roles such as:
Co-Director of the Centre for Sustainable Ruminant Systems in Yangzhou, China (since 2017)
Program leader for “Animal Production system” for the UWA Institute of Agriculture (since 2021) .
As a lecturer, he currently teaches courses such as Social Responsibility in Action, Neuroscience in Society, and Clean, Green and Ethical Animal Production. His innovative teaching approach—combining classroom learning with industry workshops and farm-based experiential opportunities—has effectively bridged theory and practice.
Dr Blache exemplifies the synergy of rigorous neuroscience and applied animal science, with an unwavering focus on animal welfare, physiology, and ethical production—both in research and teaching.
